Our Weekend in Melbourne to Celebrate a 50th Birthday

So last weekend we flew to Melbourne to celebrate Shelley's 50th Birthday with her. 🎉Shelley is a special friend of ours from Cape Town who moved to Melbourne with her family about 2 years ago.

When she decided, many months ago, to have a 50th Birthday Weekend celebration, we were all over that idea and immediately booked our flights across to Melbourne. Us new antipodeans have got to stick together, after all! Haha!

And wow, what a fun weekend it was! Other Cape Town friends of ours (who now live in Nelson on the South Island of NZ) flew up to Auckland the night before our flight, to stay and travel together the next morning. It was so great to see them again and get to travel to Australia together. That couple's daughter, our daughter and the Birthday girl's daughter were all at primary school together in Cape Town - so it was a wonderful parent reunion.

After an early start the next morning, we got to Melbourne just before lunch, grabbed our hire car and started our drive out to the house that Shelley had rented on the Mornington Peninsula for the weekend. En route, we stopped for a delicious meal at Merricks General Wine Store - a great recommendation from Shelley.

And then we continued on our way to the house which was further down the Mornington Peninsula. And what an awesome house it was. Here are a couple of photos of the pool area where we hung out a lot of the time:

Our constant companions around the pool:

These magpies are super curious birds who eat meat scraps, I was amazed to find out!

Anyway, after our arrival, we had a leisurely afternoon catching up before the other couples started arriving. And that evening we enjoyed a scrumptious dinner and got to meet all of Michael and Shelley's new friends in Melbourne. They are all such friendly, lovely people and it was fantastic to meet and chat with them.

Thanks for this photo, Helena.
I didn't end up taking too many of my own photos at the parties because I was taking a few Polaroid shots for Shelley's birthday keepsake book, chatting and eating (oh so much eating).

The next morning we went for a hike in a nearby reserve. We did a coastal hike on the Bushrangers Bay Walking Track. It was a lovely walk with some beautiful views.

And after we got back to the house, we spent a relaxing afternoon at the pool, and then got ready to go out for dinner - this time at their friends' charming home further up the Mornington Peninsula.

The view across the bay from their garden is phenomenal. Such a gorgeous spot.

This amazing sculpture was in their garden! Phwoar! Super cool, isn't it?

We ate al fresco that night as it was a beautiful evening. And that meal was also sublime.

My wonderful friend, Silvia, from our University days in Cape Town, (who now lives in Sydney) was also there that weekend. How crazy and awesome is that?! It's such a small world, isn't it? We both know Shelley from different times and experiences in Cape Town.

And the next day most of the couples who had been staying in the main house and the second house said their goodbyes and were on their way home. We stayed for one more night and our friend, Carol (who also lives in Melbourne) arrived with her and Shelley's kids, for the last night. One of Carol's daughters was also in the same year at primary school with the other girls. Crazy, and wonderful, to have a mini-reunion so far from where we all met, after all these years. It was lovely to see them all again.

We went out for dinner at a stunning restaurant on the bay that night.

And I couldn't stop taking photos of the beautiful views and that gorgeous light.

And that night, back at the house, we talked and laughed up a storm, and played cards and laughed some more. I haven't laughed so much in a long time. It was so good for the soul.

And the next morning we headed off early to catch our flight home. Go, go, go.

We had such a marvellous weekend away celebrating our sweet friend's milestone birthday - such a brilliant party idea for a 50th. Thanks for a great time, Shells and Michael.

It's always so wonderful catching up with old mates. We reminisced about the old Micklefield days and chatted about life and just enjoyed being together. What a wonderful weekend.

Happy Birthday again, Shelley. Here's to the next 50.
